Q. I am the mother of the groom and have just been invited to attend an engagement party, which is being hosted by the bride’s aunt. Is some kind of gift for the engaged couple appropriate or expected from me? Should I bring a hostess gift?

A. Engagement gifts are never considered obligatory; however, they are becoming customary in some parts of the country, usually given to the couple by family members and close friends. Gifts of money or anything else that the couple may use in their future life together would be appropriate.

A small hostess gift would certainly be a wonderful idea in this case, as it would serve as a friendly gesture toward your son’s future in-laws and family.
