Emily Post Train the Trainer Sessions

September 2008
The leaves are beginning to turn already here in New England. The kids have headed back to school, and at The Emily Post Institute, we're getting ready for an exciting fall season. We have new programs to offer parents and children! Read below for ideas and information about how to provide children with a solid foundation of good manners.
Emily Post on Parenting
Did you know that Emily believed in "floor time" long before it was a term in every pareEmily with grandsonsnting book? In Laura Claridge's new biography Emily Post: Daughter of the Gilded Age, Mistress of American Manners (Random House, October, 2008), Emily spent every Sunday afternoon playing with her grandson William Post, Sr. Mr. Post reminisces that his "grandmama" loved sitting on the floor, spending time with him doing jigsaw puzzles or watching him make lead soldiers, and that she even continued to sit on the living room floor well into her elder years.
Do You Want To Teach Children's Etiquette?

Spaces available for September 30 training in Chicago

An understanding of manners helps children build relationships, confidence and self-esteem. The Emily Post Children's Etiquette Train the Trainer Program will prepare you to teach children and teenagers about the principles of etiquette - consideration, respect and honesty - as well as the manners.

Our upcoming training is September 30 - October 2 in Chicago. For more information, please go to the Children's Train The Trainer page on our website, or contact Dawn Stanyon directly at (802) 860-1814, dawn@emilypost.com.
Children's Etiquette and Afternoon Tea

Do you live in the New York City metro area? Here's something exciting: The Emily Post Institute is teaming up with tea etiquette expert Ellen Easton for two events: Children's Table Manners and Afternoon Tea on Saturday, November 8 (for children aged 8 - 12); and Children's Etiquette for Parents and Afternoon Tea on Friday, November 7 (for parents, grandparents and other interested adults). Both events are being held at the gracious Lady Mendl's Tea Salon at The Inn at Irving Place. Space is limited. To register, contact Dawn Stanyon directly at (802) 860-1814, dawn@emilypost.com. A Question for Cindy

Soccer Dad Gone Bad?
One of the dads at my son's soccer games screams instructions at his son the whole time. It makes me and the other parents crazy. Can I say something?

Cindy says:
It's better to go right to the coach. This man might lash out at you in the heat of the moment; plus, he may respond more positively to the coach's authority. Take along another parent or two who feel the same way, and explain to the coach that this dad is bothering many parents and probably the players as well. Offer your support, but let the coach handle the problem, ideally by speaking with the parent privately.
