Classic Etiquette, Anniversary Gifts by Year

Give someone a great Anniversary Gift!

The tradition of giving certain gifts on certain anniversary years has a long and complicated origin story. Emily Post’s original 1922 Etiquette: in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home, included eight specific occasions and explained how they ought to be marked. 1st year - paper, 5th year - wood,10th year - Tin, 15th year - crystal, 20th year - china, 25th year - silver, and 50th year - Gold. Emily reflected that it was “not very good form” to have a big anniversary party, based on the idea that such a party would seem like a gift grab. An exception was made for the major anniversaries, as “the golden wedding [is] a quite sacred event.” In 1937 the American National Retail Jeweler Association filled out most of the rest of the list we are familiar with from this era

Ultimately, the oldest cliché about gift giving remains true, it really is the thought that counts. Both classic and modern gift guides suggesting certain types of presents to mark certain anniversary years can provide a great starting point for those looking for inspiration. In the end, a gift well given, that is thoughtfully chosen and honors the relationship, is the goal.
